History
of the Victorian Squash League
The Victorian Squash League (VSL) is the association that regulates the playing
of competition squash in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne, Australia. It was
formed in 1984 as a co-operative venture between the East Metropolitan Squash
Association (EMSA), and the Squash Court Owners in the area. This formalised a
link between the Professionals and the Amateur for the development of the
sport.
Squash Centre currently enter teams in the three
competitions. During the week, there is a Monday Night Ladies competition,
Tuesday Night Mixed competition, and a mixed Friday morning competition. Many
of the centres also enter teams in the Ladies and Mens
State competitions, and a Masters competition that covers all areas of
Melbourne and surrounding districts.
Over the years, the VSL has purposely promoted junior development believing
that this is the life blood of the sport. The first Junior Squash
Tournament in the world, was played at the Eastland Squash Courts more than 20
years ago, and was still being played there until its closure 25 years later.
The competition still continues at the near by Knox
Bayswater Squash Courts.
